If you exhibit at trade shows you probably have more sales available to you than you realise. Click here to learn why

When you’re successful, you forget quickly and learn slowly

When you're successful, you forget quickly and learn slowly but when sales are down, soul searching and questioning come to the fore

When things go well, it’s easy to be caught up with success.

Our business lives move quickly.

We go from one triumph to another.

It can seem at times like everything we or our team do just can’t fail.

Contrast that picture with how things look when things aren’t so rosy.

When sales are down, or contracts are lost, soul searching and analysis come to the fore.

  • “Why haven’t they rebooked?”
  • “Why did that campaign fail?”
  • “When will I/you make this turn round?”

These are questions that managers ask themselves and, in turn, their bosses ask them.

Learning slowly when things are going well is like not fixing a hole in the roof because it’s summer.

There’s little or no rain to worry about. You’ll get around to having that hole fixed soon.

Delay fixing things to the autumn, and it’s a very different story.

Hopefully, business is going well for you right now.

If so, it’s wise to take the time to analyse what’s working and why.

It’s also a good time to notice the places where things are off.

Fix them now, and winter storms will be weathered.

Very best,

David O’Beirne

PPS. The quote at the top of the page is by Duane Hartley. At the time he was CEO of telecoms business Ameritech now called AT&T Teleholdings, Inc. It struck a strong chord with me at the time having just experienced a downturn after a very long run of event successes.
