Where have they all gone?

People are disappearing at an alarming rate all over this fair land.

They’re evaporating from supermarkets, restaurants, cinemas and shops. 

Airlines and rail companies highlight similar woes.

The “missing” are staff. 

Without them, it takes longer to find the things you want to buy. 

Sometimes, much longer or never (if you leave the premises because you got fed up waiting). 

In their absence, I’ve noticed fellow punters are getting more irate. 

That’s because queues and waiting times are getting longer. 

Tempers fray, including those of the few staff who are actually in the vicinity of clients.

Supermarket scanning machines telling you, “Someone will be along to help you” only add to frustration.

You wait, looking around in vain for the person with the magic swipe paper to notice the red light flashing above your head. 

It’s irritating to you and the queue forming fast behind.

I wonder if cutting back on staff will cost these businesses money. 

Any short-term lift from lower wage costs will be eroded when clients shop elsewhere.  

When you exhibit at a trade show, your business has a time-limited sales opportunity. 

Therefore, copying the lower staff model described above makes no sense. 

It won’t help you reach sales goals either if the people you have working your stand are disinterested or wish to be elsewhere. 

If you want excellent results from future events, now is a good time to invest in training.

On the other hand, you might want to install a screen or two and have potential clients stand around until they leave.
