High achievers don’t start out at the top of their game.
They have to work to get there.
That’s something we tend to forget especially when we see them in their pomp.
Most of us didn’t know about them on their way up.
That’s because they weren’t newsworthy back then.
We were unaware of the struggles they overcame to get where they are now.
It’s only later, as they reflect back on their careers that we get insights into their rise.
Arthur Ashe was the first black player selected to the United States Davis Cup team.
He was also the only black man to win the singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open. He retired in 1980. (Source Wikipedia).
Ashe had to overcome significant obstacles to reach the elite level in tennis.
Later, while still at the top of his game, he had to deal with early retirement due to injury.
Here’s one of his most famous quotes.
It’s helpful for anyone looking to progress in their work or sport.
“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”
Those are excellent words to live by.
Make no excuses; just get started.
