Do you look forward to your appraisal?

Many don’t, but here’s why you should.

It’s a chance to advance your cause and to move towards your goal.

What the goal may be, only you can tell.

It could be a promotion, an increase in salary, a bonus, or recognition of some kind for a job well done.

Appraisals should be a two-way thing.

Your boss has their say, and you have yours.

Appraisals are a chance for your boss to point out areas that need improvement or development.

Most times, what’s said is fair.

Even if you disagree strongly with elements of an appraisal, it’s best to go with the critique rather than fume inwardly or otherwise.

One excellent way to ensure a good appraisal, whatever is said, is to have a very strong set of positive results to your credit.

That’s because results are hard to argue with (how you got the results is something else).

Results that add value to the business in some tangible way are the things that will advance your career.

Here are four simple categories, but with a bit of thought, you might add others.

  • Sales achieved over and above targets
  • New (high-value) clients landed
  • Profit margin increase
  • Costs saved in your area or across the business

The trade show training we offer is not really about the mechanics of exhibiting, although those things are well covered.

It’s actually about building sales and winning profitable, high-margin clients.

These are things that can give you solid results to highlight and discuss when you are next appraised.
