Having a short and clear name is helpful when you work in telesales.
However, even those aren’t always heard correctly by the person at the end of the phone.
My surname, O’Beirne, is not short or clear to many.
During my stint in telesales, it morphed into many variations.
These included Burns, Oberon, O’Burke, and my favourite, although I don’t know how they got to it. Bernstein.
We were a young team, so variations of our names caused much hilarity.
A would-be client called a colleague (real name Russ), Buzz.
He loved as did we, and from then on, that was what he said his name was whenever he made cold calls.
Pre-Toy Story, Buzz was not a well-known name in the UK.
As a result, more people took his calls.
To greater sales and beyond!
