Trade show halls are noisy spaces.
During the build, there’s the banging and clattering that accompanies stand assembly.
When a show is open, there’s the hubbub of the audience meeting exhibitors.
I love them both.
However, there’s one unmistakable sound in build or open time.
And that’s the sound of a stand or stands collapsing.
That occurrence has an unmistakable sound all of its own.
Fortunately, it’s rare but it can and does happen.
Here are three incidents that happened with shell scheme stands.
- An exhibitor wasn’t happy to have a pole on the corner of his stand. In a fit of pique, he kicked it away bringing his and several other connected stands, crashing down.
- During the build for a show at the NEC, a double-decker bus that was to be used as an exhibit, caught the end of a carpet as it was driven into the hall. The carpet was under a line of shell stands. The tyres yanked the carpet towards the bus pulling down all the shell stand support poles. The driver of the bus didn’t hear the shouts of the builders. The yelling and the crashing made one hell of a noise.
- Also at the NEC, as the Lord Mayor of Birmingham declared a show “open,” a whole run of shell stands on the back wall of the hall, collapsed. One exhibitor had suspended too much weight on one of the shell walls.
Miraculously, no one was hurt in any of the above incidents, although the culprit in the first incident talked about suing for “dangerous and faulty workmanship.”
That went away quickly when some of his neighbours told him they had witnessed his stand-kicking skills and thought of suing him.
If you’re reading this and you’re;
